On Milwaukee: A Guide to Milwaukee LGBTQ-Owned Restaurants (and Food Trucks)

By Lori Fredrich Senior Food Writer, Dining Editor, Podcast Host Published Jun 11, 2024 at 11:01 AM

Bars and restaurants have long served as important gathering places for members of the LGBTQ+ community, serving as safe places to escape, join together, plan and  protest. They have also – especially in recent years – become places for talented chefs to share their creativity (and their Pride) with the community.

This guide pays homage to LGBTQ+ eateries throughout the Cream City. And while the types of food they serve might vary greatly, every one of these eateries shares at least one thing in common: they are all safe, welcoming places where you can enjoy a great meal.

Cousin's Subs

A PFLAG Waukesha Donor

Our story began in 1972 when two Cousins, Bill Specht and Jim Sheppard, set out to bring their favorite style of sub sandwich from the East Coast to their new hometown of Milwaukee, Wis. Staying true to our founders’ legacy of Better Bread. Better Subs., we continue to Believe in Better — both in the quality of food we serve and in the communities we support.

The Cousins Subs legacy goes beyond making and selling quality sub sandwiches, it’s a dedication to make a difference and give back to the communities we call home. The Cousins Subs Make It Better Foundation provides us an opportunity to continue in that legacy by providing support in three areas vital to all communities: health & wellness, hunger and youth education.

Since its inception in 2013, the Make It Better Foundation has supported our local communities through monetary donations to nonprofits, education scholarships and food aid.

Sweet Perfections Bake Shoppe

A PFLAG Waukesha Donor

After many years in the food service industry working for small businesses and larger commissary-type bakeries, Ken and Peggy felt they had something special to offer: European-style products and excellent customer service.

In 2003, they opened Sweet Perfections Bake Shoppe, a neighborhood staple with an old-world atmosphere, complete with grab-and-go coolers, cafe-style tables and chairs, and even outdoor seating for warm days.

Pride Flag cookies are one of Peggy’s popular homemade all-butter cookie recipe. Ten percent  of the sales from the Pride Flag cookies are donated to PFLAG Waukesha!
