LGBTQIA+ Affirming Faith Communities
PFLAG believes that being a person of faith and an LGBTQ person – or the family member of an LGBTQ person – need not be exclusive of one another and recognizes that many faiths openly and lovingly embrace the LGBTQ community. Several of these faith communities in the Greater Waukesha Area have come to a place of affirmation and celebration of LGBTQIA+ identity.
Panelists Rev. Tory V. Topjian from Metropolitan Community Church, Cantor Martin Levson from Reform Jewish, Rev. Becky Fetters from Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Rev. David Simmons from The Episcopal Church & The Presbyterian Church, USA discuss how their religious traditions affirm the inherent dignity of the LGBTQIA+ Community and how they got there.
Directories
The intent of the Affirming Church Directory is to provide an online directory for people so they can locate and visit gay-friendly Christian churches around the world. We list congregations that meet regularly in a physical location for worship, prayer, service, and fellowship.
Although we appreciate other ministries (online, prayer, pastoral, etc.), our mission is to connect people with local church congregations so they can visit and, if they choose, get involved. All churches in our Affirming Church Directory™ have confirmed that their congregation is an affirming Christian church in some form or fashion.
Find synagogues, rabbis, and other Jewish organizations and clergy committed to belonging and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Jews and our loved ones.

We are a Reconciling in Christ Community
Because members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families are often scorned and stigmatized by society and alienated from the Church, we wish to make our caring, concern, and compassion known to all people. It is for this purpose that we affirm the following:
- that all people of all sexual/affectional orientations and gender identities share the worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God;
- that all people of all sexual/affectional orientations and gender identities are welcome within the membership of the Greater Milwaukee Synod upon making a common, public affirmation of faith; and
- that as members of the Greater Milwaukee Synod, people of all sexual/affectional orientations and gender identities are expected and encouraged to share in the sacramental and general life of the Greater Milwaukee Synod.

Celebrating life in all its diversity, seeking social justice, and honoring each one’s search for meaning
CLS is a small interfaith community in Waukesha that began its journey more than fifty years ago, finding inspiration in many facets of life while at the same time looking for ways to be useful!
We are a small, progressive-thinking, interfaith community that meets to explore the theological, spiritual, social, and political insights found in a variety of traditions. We gather, also, to celebrate life, reflect upon life’s meaning, support various social justice causes, and offer each other care and support upon life’s journey.
Our part-time ministers Sandy Peters and Katherine Zakutansky each plan a liturgy and presentation for one Sunday per month. On the remaining Sundays other CLS members provide homilies or lead discussions. We also enjoy occasional guest homilists.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church has a long tradition of welcoming those who are searching for a spiritual place where they can feel welcomed and accepted. We hope when you worship with us, you will find an environment of loving hospitality and Christian love within our community of faith. As a loving, inclusive Christian community of faith, we serve the diverse religious population of the Greater Milwaukee Area and beyond.
Metropolitan Community Church is a denomination founded in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community in 1968. As a member of this international denomination known globally as the Human Rights Church, we work to “Tear Down Walls” of injustice and oppression.
Metropolitan Community Churches originally started to provide a place for LGBTQI+ persons to worship, who were either rejected or oppressed from their faith tradition. However, today, we are a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) Community of Faith that welcomes EVERYONE, with a unique call to the LGBTQI+ community. Our worship is a blend of many traditions and styles. You will find a variety of music, scriptures, prayers and Communion (Holy Eucharist) that is offered at every worship service. You will also find that our worship is not very formal or filled with rituals, but instead offers a relaxed, opened and inviting worship environment.
We believe God made us the way we are and God loves us the way we are. We celebrate the diversity of God’s creation and work for the inclusion and acceptance of ALL God’s people in the church and community life.

Our Core Values and Practices
We value and honor traditions, yet remain open to innovation and opportunities for the sake of our vision and mission.
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we value exploring the many ways to achieve a well-balanced spiritual life and grow as Christians within community.
We value the continual Christian formation of all ages, which includes inter-generational opportunities for all members to be involved in mission work locally, nationally, and internationally.
We value a form of Christian community where all may be welcomed, accepted, respected, heard, and valued.
We value the communal worship of God through a variety of forms, styles, places, times, and music in order for worship to be expressive of the people of God known as Southminster.
We value above all else the grace and love of Jesus Christ who frees us to serve and share the same grace and love with the world.

UUCW has been a Welcoming Congregation since a congregational vote was taken in 2004 to accept the designation offered us via this national Unitarian Universalist Association program.
Each Welcoming Congregation commits to create an environment in worship, on committees, teams, and groups, in courses and all aspects of church life, that affirms and celebrates people who identify as LGBTQ.
It’s also a congregation that stands up for the human and civil rights of LGBTQ people. There are many opportunities for members to support this effort in the public square, such as marching together in the Milwaukee Pride Parade, participating with local organizations via our Split the Plate program, and other efforts.
Our congregation worked hard to fight off Wisconsin’s gay marriage statute, and our ministers celebrated the legalization of marriage for all by heading to the Milwaukee and Waukesha County Courthouses to marry couples as soon as it was legal.
We have an affirmation and nondiscrimination clause in our by-laws and other official documents affecting all dimensions of congregational life, including membership, hiring practices, and the calling of religious professionals.
“We work to create a diverse multicultural Beloved Community where all thrive. We commit to dismantling racism, white supremacy culture, and all forms of systemic oppression. We support the use of inclusive and transparent democratic processes to make decisions.”
We work to secure the rights of marginalized individuals and groups. We covenant to protect the Earth and all living things in the interdependent web of all existence.

UUUC is a PFLAG Waukesha Donor
United Unitarian Universalist Congregation began in 1877 in the village of Mukwonago. It was among the first Congregations to unite Unitarians and Universalists into one society, representing liberal religion for generations in southeastern Wisconsin. In 2012, the Congregation moved to its current home in Waukesha.
Our Congregation takes its history seriously while living out a vibrant present. We believe in an open-minded, common-sense, love-centered religion. We are interested in life’s deepest questions and long to connect with others who feel the same way.
United is non-creedal, which means you are welcome no matter what you believe, where you come from, or whom you love. We see wisdom in world religions and in each unique person.
We want to be the friendliest congregation in town – warm and inclusive while taking seriously the many challenges we face as individuals and as a society. We want to make a difference in the world, spreading hope, joy, and love.
Our congregation is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, a national union of over 1,000 Congregations. For more information, you can also check out our Guidebook.
